Hi, everyone. I'm Ddep. As you can tell, I'm new here. I've been lurking for a while, and I've noticed that no-one here seems to be a voice actor. I'm willing to provide my services. I have no professional voice work experience of any kind, so I'm unsure if what I can give oyu is at all reasonable. D'you need my help? I'm a huge fan of the mod, and I want to help make it even better. Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Can you provide us with a sample from our scripts thread? ;)

If it's any good, you're not wasting your time. :)

Umm... Okay, I've got a voice test based on the Loota scripts with minor modifications... Not entirely sure how to post it, though. Should I just email it?

We used to have Baz + Farsight as voice actors but Baz is now a texture artist and Farsight is... missing like his namesake.

Any voices should be uploaded to a file hosting site like filefront/megaupload etc and then just give us a link to your file =]

And any custom voice is better than a placeholder ;]

Also, whats your recording software like. I believe common practice is to use Audacity but am not too sure. Any software the can edit/add effects is better than just using some windows crap. Also Audacity is free so go figure. =]

Hope this helps [=

Okey dokey... here's my Loota sample...

http://www.filefront.com/14815145/Ork%2 ... Sample.mp3

The only effects applied are a slight lowering in pitch... I hope it's not too peaky.

Huh, you're actually pretty darn good at Ork voices. I'm impressed! All that really needs to be done imo is to try to cut down on the parts where the sound peaks out and it makes your speakers crackle.

Quality stuff man. :D

...Thank you! That's... really nice!

I'm unfortunately running off of a laptop mike, with no real option of other stuff to get. I also don't really know the FX to be applied for the various Chaotic/Marine/mechanical effects, but I assume I can leave that up to you guys?

Should I keep doing voice sets for the scripts? I'm really not sure where or how to start.

My script. Yayz!

Anyway, I can write as many scripts as you guys want cause it makes me feel immeasurably cool to be able to help the mod in some manner or form. I'll work at filling them out more completely in the future. :D

Plus, I really enjoy it!!

And great work Ddep, that's about how I imagined the voices. ;)

If y'all'd check my Filefront, then you might find... the Comissar Lord and Destroyer Tank Hunter...

http://www.filefront.com/14817565/Commissar-Lord.mp3/

http://www.filefront.com/14817559/Tank-Hunter.mp3/

Do these meet the seal of approval?

I think a lot of the Lord Commissar's lines are too long. Ideally unit acknowledgments and similar should only take a second or two, imo. The voice work itself is quite good, so kudos!

I really like the Destroyer commander's voice. His lines are short, clear and crisp. Excellent work. :!:

BUUMP.

You've got a decent Orky voice. Just slow it down.

Protip- take some pantyhose and make a wind screen to block out the harsher "P" and "T" sounds. Even on a computer mic, it'll clean it up. Run it through some noise reduction and put a slight phaser on there, and they should be great.

By the way, you should contact Thudo. He's in charge of all things Noise-related, and I'm helping out too. We'd love to have you aboard. ;)

We have Lootaz and BattleFortress scripts ready. DeffKopta and Kommandoz are already recorded and almost ready to go ingame.

So... wait. You want me to do them? Is that right? Are there other voice actors? I'm not really clear on this...

All voice actors are important: it makes no sense to have the same person doing different unit types even if that actor is so talented they can pull of lots of accents. We have to give everyone a chance. You can take whatever you want but just get it done before I call in "my guys".

Okay, having heard that, here are 5 (!) more voice things done; the Thunderer, Devil Dog, Hydra, Damocles and Sorceror of Nurgle scripts. Credit goes to Archive for being awesome.

Here they are.

Yeah like you work. However for future recordings I recommend you follow the following:

Here are your recording instructions:

1) Ensure you don't leave any empty sounds or silence either at start or end of recording. In other words, please cut out any quiet spots so the recording is only of your speech.

2) Avoid any low level humming or audio feedback when making your recordings.

3) Make sure you recoding volumes are high but not distorted -- its really important to hear you and fairly loudly.

4) Each voice recording should be in its own single file and have the name of the section of what was recorded for. ie. Selection01.wav, Selection02.wav, Attack01.wav, etc..

5) Please record all lines and save them as such:
Format: WAV
Bit Rate 705kbps
Audio Samle Size: 16bit
Audio Sample Rate: 44Khz
Channels: stereo

As for best practises when recoding please keep these in mind as mentioned before:

1. People tend to talk very monotonous into the microphone, some try keep the pitch low, some others high, but a strange robot-like intonation is typical. Give it some expression.

2. If something is supposed to be a scream, it better should be. Show no mercy to your neighbours, in the name of the Emperor, it must be done. If you don't scream for real, it doesn't sound realistic. There's no way to evade this law, no matter if you're a professional or not.

3. Try to avoid loud S, T, B, P .. simply consonants. The closer the microphone is, the more it tends to capture "wind sound effects" - breath and air movement produced by the actor. These consonants are hardly audible over larger distances so making them the loudest part of the speech will definitely prove unpleasant. All of this can be reduced in post processing but it's easier to avoid than to correct mistakes.

4. Keep your distance from the microphone. This is closely related to all balance issues with consonants and volume. You can remove all the troubles of trying not to sound like talking into someones ear by not talking into it. 20-30 cm should be ok for a dynamic microphone.

5. Do not apply an effects to the voice unless you really know what you're doing. This is best left to be done by the sound guy of the mod or someone else in charge of processing all the voices. There's nothing worse than incoherence in communication of your army.

=======

Your Nurgle Sorcerer and Ork Lootaz Samples seem to be a bit distorted/fuzzy like you are behind wax paper. Should be more crisp.

However, you other work is great. I like how each unit has its own "personality" but I would strength the differences in tone and inflection per unit type so each one is totally and absolutely different (almost as if recorded by a different actor -- yeah that's hard to pull).

But do like what you've done.

Recognition. :P

Hey if you need any specific ones done for you (besides orks) or suggestions for what you'd want in future voice scripts, PM me. I'll be happy to do so.

Are you offering your voice scripting or acting role?

The sorcerer was distorted because I was trying to get a more "nurgle-y" voice. I can just rerecord them crisply, and let you guys do the editing.

There is a list of units to do FoK voice scripts for plus a template to use when writing them. that's important.

Okay; I've got a proposal for you. I know that my flow of voice work had stopped, and I know that my earlier recordings were of low quality. Knowing the format that they should be recorded in, what I propose is this; I'll rerecord all my previous stuff in .wav format at better quality, and leave you guys to do the editing. I know it's more work for the FoK team, but it removes the complications of missed clips, naming problems, and allows me to produce more work for you. Is this satisfactory? If so, I'll get right to work.

Not a lot of work for me really: I've become quite good in SF 10.x, Goldwave, and others. :D

However, the most work is cleaning up a bad recording. If the recording is clear, loud with no distortion, and no background hiss then that is 3/4ths the battle for me.

I am of course dying to commence our collaboration full steam which will satisfy both FoK and myself. We have lots to record.. I am getting through mine but more voices the better.

Okay; I've redone and re uploaded almost all of my previous work (minus the Orky ones, which I'm assuming you already have), and with a few new ones added. The only audio editing involved is a little bit of amplifying to deal with my quiet microphone. If these are what you're after, then could I request some more scripts? Variety is nice.

Thoughts?

Yeah man coming along. Volume is still waayy low however.

Edit: I increased the volume on these and still get that low-level hiss and your voice sounds muzzled :|

Awesome man but remember when you make the recordings you can check them yourself by putting on head phones. ;)
