The Winnipeg Goldeyes recorded their first ever four game sweep at Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday night. The Goldeyes (14-7) ended their series against the Sioux Falls Canaries (6-14) with an 8-3 win in front of 2,549 fans at the Birdcage. The two teams were both off to hot starts, both recording runs in the first inning. After the Goldeyes loaded the bases in the top of the first with none out, they were able to score two runs. Tyler Kuhn came in to record the games first run on a Donnie Webb RBI sacrifice fly. Then Jake Blackwood scored on a Reggie Abercrombie RBI single. The Canaries responded with a leadoff home run from Steven Tinoco in the bottom of the inning. The Goldeyes extended their one run lead in the top of the third, as Luis Alen got on base with a double and then was brought home on Abercrombies second RBI single of the night. Winnipeg got a quality start from Nick Hernandez on the mound. He struck out six and only gave up one run over six and two-thirds innings of work. Hernandez was also able to retire 12 straight Canaries batters from the third to seventh innings. The win was Hernandezs first in his fourth start of the season. "Weve been working hard on Nicks mechanics the last few days," said Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea on the Jewel 101 Post-Game Show. "He went out there and did a heck of a job." Ray Sadler put another run on the board for the Fish in the fifth with a solo home run. It was then 4-1 for the Goldeyes on Sadlers team leading fifth home run of the year. In the top of the six Casey Haerther scored on a wild pitch from Ben Moore. Moore took the loss for the Canaries. Six of the nine Goldeyes batters were able to record a multi-hit night, including Abercrombie who led the team with three RBI. He batted in the Goldeyes sixth run in the top of the seventh. "He wasnt trying to do to much with the ball," said Vermilyea of Abercrombie. "He just did what he does best and served it up the middle." The Goldeyes last two runs came in the eighth. Josh Mazzola led off the inning with a solo home run, and then Tyler Kuhn came in to score on a Jake Blackwood RBI single. The Canaries were able to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to end the game off. With the win the Goldeyes move into sole possession of first place in the North Division, one game ahead of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the St. Paul Saints. The Goldeyes now head to Fargo to take on their North Division rivals the RedHawks in a three game series. The series starts Friday at 7 p.m. with Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson (2-1) set to face RedHawks pitcher Taylor Stanton (0-2). The two teams will then play again on Saturday at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m. "Its nice to get on a roll before we head over there," said Vermilyea of heading to Fargo. "they're a solid team, and its always a big series against them." PJ Tucker Jersey .ca. Hi Kerry, Love reading your column and loved watching your analysis on the TSN broadcasts! And were now in Round 2! Bruins! Canadiens! Al Harrington, another former Knicks forward, scored 22 of his 24 points after halftime for the Nuggets, allowing them to withstand Anthonys attempt to rally the Knicks after his poor shooting had them behind until the final minutes of regulation. Anthony finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, missing 20 of 30 shots in the Knicks sixth straight loss. Eric Gordon Jersey .Y. -- As if the worst start in franchise history isn't bad enough, Buffalo Sabres President Ted Black braced his teams win-starved fans for potentially more tough times. Backup goalie Petr Mrazek, in his second start of the season, made 21 saves through overtime. It was a big win for us, Mrazek said. After the overtime, I was pretty excited, because it was my first NHL shootout. It was great, because I had to stay positive after a tough first period.I couldn't think much about it. But we all played hard and got it done. Im really happy about this one.Mike Cammalleri scored two power-play goals for New Jersey. Jaromir Jagr got his 709th goal, moving into sole possession of sixth place on the NHL career list — one ahead of Mike Gartner. Peter Harrold also scored for the Devils.New Jersey lost more than a game. Travis Zajac and Adam Henrique, the teams two top centres, missed the third period. Their status for Saturdays game on Long Island is uncertain, Devils coach Pete DeBoer said.Zajac has a lower-body injury. Henrique has an upper-body injury.Nyquist beat Cory Schneider in the third round of the shootout, and Mrazek sealed the win with a pad stop on Michael Ryder.Mrazek was the fourth backup the struggling Devils faced in five games. New Jersey has only three wins in 12 games.Jagr had two points, giving him 1,770 and moving him within one of Marcel Dionne, who is fifth on the career list. The Red Wings have won three in a row and five of six. Niklas Kronwell and Henrik Zetterberg each chipped in two assists. The Red Wings scored a third unanswered goal when Miller netted his first of the season at 10:07 of the third period to make it 4-4.Kronwell drove hard to the net, only to have his shot blocked. Miller swatted the loose puck into the left side of the net. When youre not scoring, you don't get chances like that, Miller said. So I was lucky to find the rebound, and just put it in there. It feels great. It was a huge goal for the team and a huge goal for me.Ryder had a solid chancee to pull it out for Devils in the closing minutes, but couldn't deposit the backhander.ddddddddddddJagr, Cammalleri and Harrold staked the Devils to a 3-1 lead after one period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Jagr got the Devils rolling at 2:18.Detroit countered with a power-play goal at 3:50 when Sheahan deflected Kronwalls blast from the left point by Schneider.Cammalleri put New Jersey back in front at 2-1, snapping in a shot from the left circle for a power-play tally at 13:52.Harrold, taking a feed that Jagr threaded through traffic, scored from the right circle dot at 15:18.It was the first goal in 49 games for the Devils defenceman, playing in his second game this season following a recall from the minors on Nov. 17.Cammalleri struck again on the power play, 28 seconds into the second period, for the Devils third unanswered goal.A seemingly secure advantage slipped away as the period progressed.Ouellet, left alone in the slot, got his first NHL goal at 1:55 to cut the deficit to two. That energized the Red Wings as they outshot the Devils 17-6 in the period. The Devils blew a golden opportunity to reverse the momentum with a 5-on-3 power play for 1:56. New Jersey managed only one shot in that span.We had a chance to extend the lead and didn't do anything with it, DeBoer said. That was a key moment in the game. Then, we took a lot of penalties and let them back into it. I expected us to have a little bit more of a killer instinct, but we didn't have it.Abdelkader, wide open in the slot, swatted a pass out from Henrik Zetterberg for a power-play goal at 12:52 to trim the Devils lead to 4-3.And the tide had turned in Detroits favour. How many leads can we continue to lose, good healthy leads? There are no excuses for us, Cammalleri said. I hope were not ready to dwell over this. We can't overthink things. We have to pull up our socks, man up and get ready to play a big one against the Islanders.NOTES: After nine days on the road, where they went 1-2-1, the Devils were home for only one game. ...
